Kolly Insider wishes Happy Birthday to Dhayanidhi Alagiri!

With the release of Gautham Menon’s ‘Vaaranam Aayiram,’ Dhayanidhi Alagiri, the producer was born. This was the first film produced under the banner of Dhayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine Movies, and it became one of the highest grossers in Tamil cinema during that year. From then on there has been no looking back for this young producer whose second production venture was ‘Tamil Padam’ which was a farce on Tamil films.

The film saw RJ Shiva in his first ever lead role and the film became quite popular in Tamil Nadu; the songs in the film were also a hit. Karthi’s ‘Paiyaa,’ ‘Naan Mahaan Alla,’ and a host of other Tamil films, which were either adopted under his banner or distributed by him, did well at the box office.

Further on Cloud Nine Movies went on and adopted ‘Mankatha’ a Venkat Prabhu directorial which had Ajith Kumar playing the lead. Apart for this film being Thala’s 50th film in Tamil, the movie also had a host of stars to the likes of Action King Arjun, Trisha, Andrea, Vaibhav, Premji, Anjali and Lakshmi Rai. Post release, it hit the jackpot at the box office and is still raking in the moolah big times for its makers.

Dayanidhi Alagiri is celebrating his birthday today. As this young filmmaker blows another candle, here’s wishing him good luck in his future projects. He will be teaming up with director Vetrimaran shortly.

Vettrimaran choose Suriya for his next?

 

Well there have been talks on this front for more than a couple of months now. The director, though just two films old, is the proud owner of two National Awards - one for the Best Director and the other for the Best Screenplay, for his critically and commercially acclaimed film 'Aadukalam' which also fetched its hero Dhanush a National Award for the Best Actor category.

Vetrimaran has made it clear that he will not be showcasing his favorite hero Dhanush in his third film. So who will play the lead in the next film of this director, who is known for his critically acclaimed films?

Well there is a strong rumour doing rounds in the Tamil film circles that Vetrimaran might just rope in Suriya Sivakumar for his third film. According to sources close to the director, he is almost through with the scripting of his third film, and is all set to ready his team for this project. This film will be produced by Dayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies.

Suriya is, at the moment committed to KV Anand's 'Maatran' after which he will be doing a film for director Hari. Though nothing regarding the Vetrimaran-Suriya association has been confirmed yet, there is a strong undercurrent in the Kollywood circles that Suriya might just nod his yes to this project.

Cloud Nine Movies Dayanidhi Azhagiri made a comeback with big bang and it all happened with ‘Mankatha’. The film is spinning huge profits in box office and indeed has gained incredible laurels. Before few days, there were news about Dayanidhi Azhagiri and Vetrimaaran coming together for a film and it was expected that Silambarasan will be playing the lead role.

Shedding light on this project, Dayanidhi Azhagiri has mentioned that Velraj will be handling cinematography and G V Prakash on music. He has now asked for his fan followers in twitter to suggest the apt actors for the film revealing that it’s a raw script.

Sun Pictures gamble with Mankatha

 

Mangaatha is a high-stakes card-game popular in the gambling dens of Tamil Nadu.

With a big ticket Tamil film titled after this game, Sun Pictures, the film production arm of Sun TV Network, is taking a calculated gamble to re-establish itself as a front-runner in releasing big budget movies in the state.

Sun Pictures has taken over the entire rights of Ajit-starrer, Mankatha and is releasing it today (Already released in few countries), to cash in on the long-festival five-day weekend starting with Ramzan. “It is going to be a very very big release in both the domestic and overseas markets. This is also the first film of Ajit, which Sun Pictures will be distributing,” Vijay Kumar, CEO, Sun TV Network Ltd told Financial Chronicle.

This will also be the first time; Sun Pictures is directly releasing a movie, after the AIADMK, under chief minister J Jayalalithaa, came to power in May this year. Soon after, Sun Pictures COO, Hansraj Saxena was arrested and jailed, following a series of police complaints — for cheating and threatening from a few distributors and producers.

Until a tiff in mid-2007 with the then ruling DMK’s first family, Sun TV Network had limited itself to buying satellite rights of Tamil movies. However, starved of fresh content, the leading Tamil television channel was forced to enter film production and distribution business, as a natural extension, soon after and had acquired and released several big budget movies since then.

Sensing a business opportunity, two grandsons of former state chief minister, M Karunanidhi — Udayanidhi Stalin, son of former deputy chief minister, M K Stalin, and Dayanidhi Alagiri, son of Union Minister, M K Alagiri, also forayed into film production under the banners — Red Giant Movies and Cloud Nine Movies, respectively.

Sun Pictures, Red Giant and Cloud Nine were very active over the past couple of years and all big films came into their kitty, independent of each other. With assured supply of big film content, each one of them also held sway over a chain of theatres across the state, which lend credit to a debate over the ruling family’s control over the Tamil film industry.

“With negotiations and settlements resulting in withdrawal of a few complaints, Sun has put in a new team in place to get back into film distribution. It is also a fact that no other film banner in the state has the money power or a 360-degree marketing capability as that of Sun Pictures,” an industry insider said.

Interestingly, Dayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine is the original producer of Mankatha. However, fearing opposition from theatre owners, who might force their way to off-set part of their losses accrued from Cloud Nine’s earlier movies, Dayanidhi handed over the rights to Sun Pictures.

Mankatha rights : What happened between Gnanavel Raja's Studio Green & Dhayanidhi Alagiri

 

In the last 48 hours, we have witnessed some strange developments on Mankatha distribution rights and release. Producer Dhayanidhi Alagiri, who sold the theatrical and satellite rights of the Tamil movie to Gnanavel Raja's Studio Green, changed his mind at the eleventh hour and took back the same after signing the deal in a quick succession, which left the audience wondering about the reason.

On the weird developments, a source claims that Dhayanidhi Alagiri decided to take back the rights of Mangaatha, when he came to know that Gnanavel Raja was planning to sell it to Jaya TV. Initially, he was not worried about the deal but he was blasted by his family members for allowing Studio Green to sell it to the television channel, which is run by Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha, who is the arch-rival of DMK family.

Later, Udhayanidhi Stalin intervened and resolved the issue by buying back the rights and selling the same to Sun Pictures. Now, it is planning to release the movie on August 31.

However, Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja starrer Mangaatha has been censored. The movie directed by Venkat Prabhu has passed the test with U/A certificate.

Update on Mankatha theatrical rights by Radaan Media Works [Video]

 

It is Kollyinsider who first posted the news that Radhik's  Radaan Media Works got the theatrical rights of Mankatha. Here are the few more updates on it...

The theatrical rights of the film, which was acquired by Sun Pictures, has been sold to Radhika Sarath Kumar's Radaan Media Works. The movie, which has been passing from one hand to other from a few days, seems to have finally come to an end.

A couple of days back, Mangaatha was sold to Gnanavel Raja's Studio Green but within 24 hours but Dhayanidhi Alagiri took back the rights, as the latter was planning to sell the movie to Jaya TV. Later, it was said that Sun Pictures sealed the deal after Udhayanidhi Stalin intervened and resolved the issue.

However, Sun Pictures, which has not released films in the recent past after its CEO Hansraj Saxena was arrested on various charges, was planning to release Mangaatha. But now it is revealed that it has only bagged the satellite rights, leaving the distribution rights to Radhika Sarath Kumar's Radaan Media Works.

Radhika confirmed the news in her twitter page. Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja starrer film is reportedly hitting the screens with 300 prints.

Radikaa's Radaan media joins Sun Pictures in Mankatha distribution

 

Mankatha is making all news due to the political names that has been linked with the movie. After the news stories about Mankatha being taken by Studio Green for Distribution, later came the news that Sun Pictures has bagged the Tv satellite rights, while the movie will be distributed by Dayanidhi's Azhagiri's Cloud Nine movies itself, who has produced the movie. Finally it is said Sun Pictures got the theatrical & satellite right for the movie.

Studio Green backed-up Sun Pictures releasing Mankatha on Aug 31st

 

Gnanavel Raja's Studio Green, which acquired the theatrical and satellite rights of Ajith Kumar's Mangaatha, has surprisingly dropped the film. Now, Sun Pictures, which did not have any big releases in the recent past, is releasing the film on August 31.

Dhayanidhi Alagiri tweeted, “Mangaatha is not releasing under Studio Green banner,” But on the today's newspapers ads, where it shows that the production house is distributing the upcoming Tamil film, he clarifies, “Mangaatha ads have come under Studio Green banner today... We couldnt remove it before of the cut off time in the papers.”

On the other end, Gnanavel Raja says that he dropped Mangaatha due to some reasons. But refused the reveal why he opted out of the project.

However, Ajith Kumar, Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja starrer Mangaatha has been be censored yesterday. The movie directed by Venkat Prabhu has passed the test with U/A certificate.

Studio Green's head Gnanavel Raja confirmed to a few media houses that Studio Green will not be releasing this much-expected film but did not elaborate on the reasons. (There are some talks & sources says the reason is satellite rights were sold to Sun TV) A few birdies say that Sun Pictures is keen on releasing 'Mankatha', handling the distribution and marketing.

Also, sources from Sun Network reveal that Sun TV has bagged the satellite rights of this biggie! This was earlier announced and Dhayanidhi rubbished them as rumours (above tweet), but the reports are now official.
