‘Why this kolaveri’? These three words have redefined Tamil cinema music in a matter of days. Will Tamil film be the same ever again, we don’t know. Why? Because there is a difference between a hit song and a sensationally trend setting one. And, why are we calling Kolaveri a ‘sensational trend setter’; because it has got a jaw dropping 1.04 crore views on the official Sony channel in Youtube as of 29th Nov 2011. To understand the sheer size of this number, you have to also know that Mankatha has managed 3 lakh hits so far (which was considered huge at that time).

So, what is it that has made entire population go ‘kolaveri’ over a song, that, a few years back, may not have qualified as a proper song, let alone become a huge hit. It is difficult to point out. Perhaps it is the uncomplicated nature of the entire affair that makes it so hum worthy. Even Rahman’s international music and Vairamuthu’s literally rich lines could not get such a response from the people. ‘Kolaveri’ seems more like the leisurely rambling of a frustrated young man who wants to vent his feelings by shouting them out loud over a bottle or two of liquor; now, every young man out of college has experienced or seen such a scene at least once; that is where the connection between the youth and the song comes from.
The song stands for everything that youngsters find lousy and frustrating about life in general and love in particular. And, the lines which abound in the most colloquial of terms both in English and Tamil without a care in the world for grammar, diction or propriety is the high point. Everyone likes to break the rules and the team of ‘3’ has done it. So, what? Many more people have broken rules even before this.
Yes, film music is a game with a set of rules and from time to time there are people who bend, break and change the rules. But, the team of ‘3’ changed all this, they did not bend, break or change the rules, they changed the game itself. In short, while all others were busy running a race, the ‘3’ team organized a race of their own and won without competition. It is one thing to get Dhanush to write the lyrics, it is another to get a debutante score music and it is a very brave thing to let Dhanush sing it and also allow him to mimic musical instruments halfway into the song and the biggest move was to do all of them in the same song. It was an all or nothing approach that clicked.
But, let’s be clear on one thing. The song is such a rage probably because the team of ‘3’ did not think too much about it. In fact, the listeners, fans, critics and media would have spent more time thinking over the merits and other aspects of this song than the people who made it. ‘Kolaveri’ was a fun activity for all those who did it and that is why it is fun for all those who hear it. If it was an intellectual activity, it would never have been close to the phenomenon that it is now.
The biggest surprise about ‘Kolaveri’ however is the fact that the song has not got any haters till now. From what we have seen, any song that demystifies lyrics, music and rendition, bringing it down to layman levels, will always have its share of detractors who say that it is a degradation, deterioration and defamation of art. But, ‘kolaveri’ has not elicited any such response to date. Why, we don’t know, the song has a likeable quality to it.
The recent past has been replete with many instances where the whole process of making a song has been simplified to amazing levels. All of them have been hits and one has to concede that ‘kolaveri’ is an exceptionally well executed progression of all previous efforts. Songs like ‘Evandi unna petthan’, the recent ‘Kadhal yen Kadhal’ from Mayakkam Enna, a couple of songs from ‘Deivathirumagal’ are all example of such hits.
You can look back many years to the hit number from Badri which had Vijay singing quite effortlessly or the many jingles that Kamal has done over his career like ‘Alwarpetta Andavaa’ from Vasool Raja. There is also one rather unnoticed experiment done by Devan Ekambaram in the recent past; the ‘happy happy’ song from Bale Pandiya.
It was perhaps all these that culminated in the ultimate casual musical experiment carried out by Anirudh, Dhanush and Aishwarya Dhanush to give a ‘people’s hit’. For all those who have not yet listened to this ‘rage of a song’, one simple piece of advice; don’t think about it too much, just enjoy it.

3 has always been my film: Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan looks like an oil painting. Touch her and she’ll smudge.
At the moment, her latest film 7 aum Arivu, despite its incoherent content is one of the top grossers of the year. Naturally she’s on top of her game and is happy to be a part of its success streak.
The actress who is shooting near Mahabalipuram for 3 opposite Dhanush spoke to and confesses :  “I am lucky to be part of big films be it in Telugu or Tamil”. She’s also drawing all the stares because she is the heroine in Gabbar Singhthe remake of Dabangg in Telugu opposite Pawan Kalyan.
Talk about 3 and Shruti is all smiles: “ This is probably one of my fastest shoots so far. Aishwarya is not only the first woman director that I am working with, but one of the most professional team that I have come across. There was a bound script and perfect planning made us complete the film in record time. I will be completing the film in the next two days, and then I’m off to Pollachi for Gabbar Singh”
Speak about the script and her role, Shruti is enthralled: “3 has always been my film. I saw the movie before it was made. I could envision it when I heard the script and it was wow! The story was amazing and I thought if I’ve got this opportunity I should give it a shot.  That’s why after my initial dates issue, I came back into the project”.
The conversation goes into her Facebook impersonator: “ All I have to say that this person who is interacting with a lot of my fans and friends is not doing the right thing and I warn everyone who is following me on FB that it’s a fake id.”

Osthi will take me places: Richa

Richa Gangopadhyaya is basking in the glory of Mayakkam Enna’s success. Now she is awaiting the release of her next Osthi opposite Silambarasan on 8 December.

‘In Osthi, I play the role of a rustic village belle. It’s in sharp contrast to the role I played in Maykkam Enna. The character is similar to Sonakshi Sinha’s role in Dabangg. In fact, I had to gain some weight for Osthi. I had to shoot for both films back-to-back and it was hectic. However, I’m on cloud nine as Mayakkam Enna has scored at the box office,’ she says.
On her role in Osthi, she says, ‘in Osthi, you will see me dancing and singing along with Simbu and it’s a commercial film.’
Osthi will be on par with Dabangg. Director Dharani has done a fantastic job and everyone will love the film, she adds.
Interestingly the movie has peppy numbers set to tunes by S Thaman. The songs are already topping the charts.
The movie will have a grand release across the globe with maximum number of prints

Can fans get Ajith to agree?

Producer Dhayanidhi Alagiri had said that there will be no 100th-day function for Mankatha because Ajith will not attend it. As a policy, the star never attends public functions and there is no point in organizing a function without the lead star, Dhayanidhi had said.

The producer has now said that if Ajith fans can get him to agree to participate in the 100th-day function, he will organize a grand function. Dhayanidhi added that if only Ajith agrees to grace the event he would arrange for a function that would be the grandest in the Tamil film industry so far!

Anushka perform an ‘item number’

Leading Telugu and Tamil actress Anushka Shetty a.k.a. Anushka has agreed to perform an ‘item number’ in an upcoming Telugu film. Anushka is one of the most sought-after heroines in both the languages and reportedly commands and gets a hefty sum as her fee to star in these films. Considering her market value, producers hardly think twice before shelling out the money to be paid to her.

This year, Anushka has had a quite satisfactory stint in Tamil films. Both her films, though divergent in nature, earned her critical acclaim. While Vaanam showed her depicting the role of a sex-worker with ease, her second release Deivathirumagal had her playing a protagonist advocate out to seek justice to a mentally challenged person (played by Vikram) who was fighting against odds to get the custody of his daughter.
She has reportedly committed to dance for an ‘item number’ in an upcoming Telugu film titled Gabbar Singh. The film is the Telugu remake of the Bollywood hit film Dabbangg which starred Salman Khan and debutant Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles. Munni Badnaam Hui, which was hottie Mallika Arora-Khan’s ‘item number’ in the film, went on to become a huge hit and had become quite a rage across North India.
Anushka is all set to shake her sexy hips for the song equivalent to that of Munni…. in the Telugu version. Incidentally, Dabbangg has also been remade in Tamil as Osthe starring Simbu in the lead and is expected to release next Friday. Bollywood’s Hollywood-bound actress Mallika Sherawat has starred in the ‘item number’ in the Tamil version which has been sung by veterans L.R. Eswari and T.Rajendhar.
Anushka has said that she agreed to star in the dance sequence because she liked the song very much. Whatever be the case, we just can’t wait till Anushka’s ‘item number’ is filmed; can we?
